Who We Are

Con Alma Health Foundation, Inc. is New Mexico's largest health foundation. It was created in 2001 through the sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, a not for profit corporation. State law required that its non-charitable assets be set aside for a similar organization. The conversion provided charitable assets of more than $20 million for the Con Alma Health Foundation. In 2007, the Foundation awarded more than $2 million in grants to nonprofits across New Mexico, bringing the total awarded since inception to more than $7 million. The Foundation is governed by a statewide Board of Trustees. In addition, a statewide Community Advisory Committee provides advice and counsel. Con Alma’s impact reaches beyond the dollars which it grants. Con Alma’s health disparities report serves as a resource for improving health in New Mexico.

Project DIVERSITY

Con Alma Health Foundation received a $250,000 two-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Northwest Health Foundation, which will be matched with another $125,000 ($105,000 from Con Alma and $20,000 from the New Mexico Community Foundation) for a total project budget of $375,000 to help address the nursing shortage in New Mexico. Con Alma was one of 11 foundations nationwide to receive funding in the second year of Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future. Project DIVERSITY, a partnership with the New Mexico Community Foundation and the University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) Nursing Division, is designed to increase the number of ethnically diverse nurses in New Mexico. The Foundation made the decision to commit its resources to nursing issues as a result of its health disparities report. (Please see 2006 Annual Report insert.) New Mexico will need an additional 4,520 RNs and 680 LPNs by 2012.
