Recognizing that relevant, accurate health care information is critical to addressing the complex health-related issues New Mexico faces, Con Alma embarked on a research project to capture health care information and use the evidence to shape grantmaking decisions. The report serves to inform the foundation of the current and future needs of the people, based on statistics provided by New Mexico government agencies.

“Con Alma made the decision to release the report to the public due to the significance of the findings and the potential for the information to serve as a resource for others working toward improving health care in our state,” said Dolores E. Roybal, Executive Director.

In May 2006, Con Alma Health Foundation released “Closing the Health Disparity Gap in New Mexico: A Roadmap for Grantmaking,” an analysis of the complex issues that promote and threaten the health and access to healthcare for all New Mexicans.

Women’s Health Inequalities in New Mexico:
Challenges & Policy Options

Health inequalities are a growing public health challenge which disproportionately impact women. While increased attention has been given to women’s health issues at the federal and state levels over the last 30 years, and the overall health of the US population continues to improve, health inequalities among women who are low income, uninsured, and racial and ethnic minorities persist.

This brief reviews the evidence underpinning the determinants of women’s health in New Mexico and suggests broad areas of policy options to assure that all women are able to achieve equitable access to health care and a healthy life, regardless of race/ethnicity, gender and socio-economic status.
