Con Alma Health Foundation Grants

    INTRODUCTION:

    Con Alma Health Foundation awards grants to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving the residents of the state of New Mexico. Grant recommendations are made by the Con Alma Health Foundation Grant Making Committee, comprised of members of the Board and Community Advisory Committee, and ratified by the Foundation's Board of Trustees. Con Alma Health Foundation has two primary grant cycles per year: Target Grants, up to $75,000; and Small Grants, $15,000 or under.

    Other funding opportunities through Con Alma Health Foundation: Additionally, Con Alma Health Foundation and the Hospital Auxiliary for Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC), work together as the Northern New Mexico Health Grant Group (NNMHGG). This grant cycle awards grants to eligible nonprofits that target the populations traditionally served by LAMC. In May 2002 the Los Alamos Medical Center was sold by Banner Health Systems, a non-profit corporation, to Province HealthCare, a for-profit corporation. Some proceeds from the sale of Los Alamos Medical Center (LAMC) were preserved to serve the unmet healthcare needs of the people of Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and northern Santa Fe counties. NNMHGG distributes investment income from those proceeds through non-continuing grants of $20,000 or less to organizations that serve the target geographic area.

    MISSION:

    The mission of the CAHF is organized to be aware of and respond to the health rights and needs of culturally and demographically diverse peoples and communities of New Mexico. Guided by our mission, we pursue the following goals through our grantmaking:

    • to address the particular health needs of traditionally underserved populations, including low-income individuals, people of color, youth and residents of rural areas;

    • to support and strengthen nonprofit organizations that seek to improve the health of underserved populations;

    • to recognize and encourage leaders who are working to increase health and wellness within their communities; and

    • to inform the development of public policies that promote wellness and enhance access to preventive health care.

    AREAS OF INTEREST:

    Con Alma Health Foundation focuses broadly in the areas of health and human services with special emphasis on culturally diverse, rural and tribal communities. Priority consideration is given to proposals that demonstrate strong collaborative relationships, have multiple funding sources and a plan for sustainability and address systemic change rather than direct services.

    GRANTMAKING PRIORITIES:

    Recognizing that relevant, accurate healthcare information is critical to addressing complex health-related issues in New Mexico, Con Alma embarked upon a research project designed to help guide its future grantmaking. “Con Alma made the decision to release the report to the public due to the significance of the findings and the potential for the information to serve as a resource for others working toward improving health care in our state,” according to Dolores E. Roybal, executive director.

    The report, titled “Closing the Health Disparity Gap in New Mexico: A Roadmap for Grantmaking,” is based on statistics provided by a myriad of New Mexico government agencies and nonprofit health and advocacy organizations.

    “The Roadmap for Grantmaking” is Con Alma’s way of moving data to action, and being a key player in reducing health disparities in New Mexico,” said Lisa Cacari Stone, Ph.D., primary author of the report. The report included recommendations for grantmaking and beyond focusing on two priority areas: Invest in People and Invest in the System.
